CASA Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Katherine “K.C.” Wells
“I want the kids to know that there is always someone in their corner.”
K.C. was sworn-in as a CASA on December 20, 2020, and accepted a case the very next day. K.C. had been a stay-at-home mom when her children were younger. Ten years prior to being a stay-at-home mom, she taught middle and high school French and English. Now she is on her sixth year as a field experience supervisor for student teachers; five years with Purdue University Lafayette and currently with Valparaiso University.
While on a break from field supervising, she thought “it was good time to dive into something new,” as she had always been interested in the work of a CASA. She attended an information session, completed the training, and was sworn-in. Within days of her first case resolving, K.C. eagerly accepted her second case. We here at the Porter County CASA Program are delighted with her dedication and enthusiasm for this endeavor.
K.C. stated, “I have met some great people who are involved with CASA, but my very favorite part of being a volunteer are the kids I get to work with.” She went on to say, “watching them grow and change makes my heart so happy.” We asked K.C. why she continues to be a CASA and accepting new cases and she replied, “because there is a need for adults who will remain consistent in children’s lives.”
When not working or volunteering, K.C. loves to read, travel, see live theater, and spend time with family and friends. She went on to say, “[because] my children are 15 and 13, I take any time I can get with them!”
K.C. leaves the readers with this final thought, “I encourage anyone who has an interest in CASA to attend an informational meeting. It’s truly a great resource in our community, and the more, the merrier!”
