CASA Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Amy Burke
“Such generous, selfless people doing the most important work!”
The Porter County CASA program welcomed Amy Burke into the program in March of 2024. She first heard about the program at an economic development meeting where the CASA director spoke and expressed the need for new volunteers. Amy says, “The message went right to my soul about what important work this is!” Her daughter, Erin, is also a CASA and was sworn in before Amy. Although Amy wasn’t sure if she had time in her busy schedule to be a CASA, she knew that few people ever really have enough time. She simply decided to prioritize this important calling.
Amy is an educator by heart: she taught English for twenty years and then moved into administration. Both in her work and in her deeds, she has shown that she knows she can have a positive impact on children and their opportunities in life. Despite the emotional weight and challenges that can sometimes accompany the work, she says the sense of fulfillment that comes from advocating for a child is a powerful motivator to continue.
Since becoming a CASA, Amy has learned a lot. She says, “I believe we spend our lives in different situations, attempting to find empathy and compassion, to be kind and gentle with others. Being a CASA allows for this growth for me and allows for relationship building in a system devoted to helping families.” With her years of experience in education and her current position at WorkOne, Amy certainly knows what it takes to help families and to advocate for kids who need her.
When Amy isn’t busy helping others, she is a family gal! She loves to travel, and she is also an avid reader and runner. She also loves to spend time golfing and boating with her husband. The Porter County CASA program is thankful to have Amy as a devoted volunteer!
