CASA Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Barbara Houpt

“I want to share the love, knowledge and skills I have with the most vulnerable.”

Barb Houpt joined CASA as a volunteer in April of this year. As a critical care nurse for the last thirty years, Barb has always been passionate about helping others and giving back to her community. When she isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, hiking, being outdoors, cooking, baking, and traveling. Her favorite activity, though, is being a mother.

Barb wanted to join the CASA program as a volunteer for a long time, but life kept getting in the way. As soon as she was able, she signed up for the training and dove right into the program. She firmly believes that children are the most innocent and valuable resources we have, and they need to be protected. Barb was raised in a “village environment” with a lot of love and knows she has the ability to make a difference in children’s lives.

The things that Barb likes the most about being a CASA are the people she meets, learning, and making a difference. She says, “There is something to learn from every person and every situation if you just listen.” She is inspired by the passion and compassion of the people involved in the CASA program. She is also rewarded by being able to watch the children she advocates for grow, smile, and develop.

One of the reasons Barb wants to continue as a CASA volunteer is that she sees the good in everyone. She trusts that parents want to do what’s best for their children, but sometimes they need help, knowledge, and resources. Barb is able to not only help the parents get what they need, but she can also help the children get what they need the most: a safe, stable environment where they know that someone truly cares about them.

We’re very proud to have Barb as part of our organization!
